Teenagers are at the critical stage of their lives, a transition from being child to maturing into an adult. During this phase they go through several changes, such as hormonal changes and pressure from their peers, impact of surroundings, as well as media.
At this stage you should understand them, their needs, expectations and as a parent you should become their friend than a person who will take full authority of their lives.
There should be proper two way communication between you and your teenage child otherwise it will not take time to turn them into a rebellious teen and dealing with rebellious teenager is too difficult.
Here are few tips for you which will make parenting teenager easy:
As a parent, you must set some boundaries and define rules for your child, but don’t be harsh. You should discuss rules with your teenage child before setting them and you can negotiate rules with them. Enforce the consequences if they are broken. Cursing or physical violence is not solution for anything.
Even if your schedule is busy, find some time for your teens. Be there for them when they need you in good and bad times.
Don’t compare your teenage child with others, don’t underestimate them. Let them know what they mean to you, praise them for their good work and their wise decisions. Tell them you love them and you are proud of them. This will make them feel pleased.
Allow them to make their own decisions and give them some space to choose their own tastes in outfit, hobbies, activities and other interests. It will give them sense of individuality and will create stronger bond between you and your teenager child.
Find time - In order to have good communication, you must find time to talk to your teen. This does not require a formal meeting; use time you have together while driving in the car or at the dinner table to listen to what he or she has to say.
Don’t expect too much from your teens. Don’t expect them to satisfy your unfulfilled dreams after all you should know that they are individuals with their own life to lead. Treating them independently can boost their self esteem and will demand respect from them.
Don’t criticize them on their failure, restrain yourself from commenting. Rebellious teens will be expecting that they will be criticized for their actions but if they receive an encouragement from your side at this point of time, it will help you to win their trust and it will help you to enhance your relation with them.
Teen is a stage where they need your attention, love, care, understanding and your support. To avoid all this find some time for your teens, try to understand them, listen them and help them in their problems.
